Gustaf Adolfs Torg
Since the 17th century, the square Gustaf Adolfs Torg has been Gothenburg’s political centre. Surrounding the square are the old and new City Halls, the City Council and the Commodity Exchange, and adjacent to it are the shopping mall Nordstan and the transport hub Brunnsparken. In the centre of the square stands a statue of the city’s founder Gustav II Adolf. He gazes off into the distance, portrayed just in the moment of pointing to where he commanded the city of Gothenburg be constructed. In the paving of the square, there is also a map showing what the neighbourhoods of Gothenburg looked like in 1644.
