Enjoy beautiful plants, gardens and natural areas The Gothenburg Botanical Garden was inaugurated in 1923, the same year as Gothenburg’s 300th anniversary. Today the garden holds 20,000 unique plants from 130 countries, found in the park’s different areas. Visit the dramatic Rock Garden has 6,000 plant species from all corners of the world and an impressive waterfall. The Japanese glade provides a peaceful experience among Japan’s rich plant world, and in the Horticultural Gardens edible plants grow together with magnificent ornamental plants. If you continue your walk through the Botanical Garden to the adjacent Änggårdsbergen nature reserve, you will find the botanist’s arboretum – a collection of trees with 300 different species. In the park, there’s also a perennial garden, rhododendron valley, steppe plantings, and many more areas to discover. Read more about the different areas of the Botanical Garden at botaniska.se. New greenhouses and new visitor centre The Gothenburg Botanical Garden’s purpose is to work with the diversity of the plant world, and the garden is an important place for scientific research and education. Within a few years, visitors to the Botanical Garden will be welcomed by new, modern greenhouses and a new visitor centre. The new houses will be ready in 2028, and open to the public in 2030. The greenhouses will have many different climate zones, from cold, alpine environments to warm, humid tropical, offering an exciting experience while strengthening the garden’s important mission. Café and restaurant with outdoor terrace You will find the café and restaurant Botanical Paviljongen a about 400 metres into the garden. It is open all year round (but not every day, see the website for opening hours) for those who want to have a coffee or lunch in the beautiful surroundings. When the weather permits, you can sit outside on the generous outdoor terrace. Information prior to your visit Voluntary admission for visitors is 30 SEK (tour operators and bus companies pay 30 SEK per visiting person). The garden is open every day and at all times, year-round. The Bergshuset greenhouse is open from 10:00 to 16:00, while the other greenhouses are closed while waiting for the new buildings to be completed. You are welcome to have a picnic on the lawns below the Rock Garden. However, you are not allowed to barbecue, kick a ball or run around in the plantings. Dogs are not allowed in the Botanical Garden between 1 March and 30 September because of the garden’s many fragile and unique plants. Dogs are welcome during the period 1 October to 28 February.
