Älvsborgsdammen – or “Plaskis” as locals call it – is one of Gothenburg’s most beloved summer spots for families with children. The shallow splash pool is located near Mariaplan in the Kungsladugård district and has been a popular meeting place since the 1930s. The pool covers just over 1,000 square metres and was previously filled with around 200,000 litres of treated pool-quality water during the summer months. During the rest of the year, the empty basin has been used for spontaneous activities such as skateboarding and local events. Reopening after renovation Älvsborgsdammen is Gothenburg’s only historic splash pool that has remained in operation. Much of the technical equipment was more than 50 years old and needed to be replaced to meet current standards. After an extensive renovation with a new pool, modern water treatment system, new pump house and improved accessibility around the area, Plaskis will reopen on 17 June 2026. The opening will be celebrated with a stage programme from 16.00 and 18.00, and children will be treated to ice cream. The history of Plaskis Älvsborgsdammen was built between 1930 and 1933 and is one of Gothenburg’s earliest public splash pools. It was created as part of the city’s investment in public bathing and play areas for children. Locals quickly began referring to the site as “Plaskis”.
